[1] How reliable are the PSA results?
[2] I am 65, 1995 had PSA of 4.2, then every year bet. 1.4 and 2.4. Last year 1.7. This year 7.2. Can this be an error or cancer possibility? Will the
repeat if back to 2.0 reliable or 3rd one will be needed?
[3] What are the other SCAM tests to determine cancer ?
[4] Is CAT scan, Sonogram reliable to detect cancer? How about new MRI machine by GE?
[5] New blood tests in phase trials are they approved?
[6] chances of infections from biopsy ? which my urologist wants to do. He has not even suggested any other alternatives or medications.
[any othe suggestions ??] Thanks _________________ ANIL |

The free PSA is more reliable than the standard PSA. To accurately determine what is going on, the biopsy is the best, and there is little chance of infection as long as they give you antibiotics first. Prostascan is the best scan for pCa. Yes there is a new "PSA" test that is about to come out. |

Hello
PSA levels are reliable to detect abnormalities. The problem is that high levels are not always indicative of disease, causing a lot of anxiety and procedures. But there is no other way to rule out cancer other than having a biopsy. The chances of infection are very low, but as with all procedures there are risks involved. Personally I would have the biopsy to establish the diagnosis.
best regards,

DavidCohen , What new tests are and where can I get info. on those. Any web site.?
Leo, yes it does cause lot of anxieties. I may repeat it soon / 3-4 months before biopsy is done. What if the repeat comes low? Any such studies done on this? _________________ ANIL |

How reliable are the biopsies? I had a friend who had 2 uros did it. one said he had cancer the other said he didnot. He died after 3 years of seeding at 72. biopsy is done on the surface close to urethra? are the samples taken from surface closer and not deep inside the prostate?
any website explains how this is done? _________________ ANIL |

DavidCohen, Thank you very much for the information on
[MOL] Anti-Malignin Antibody in Serum.
more I read about prostate cancer more it seems lost time and money for testings and biopsies. If PSA is above 2.0 basically one has to get checked every 6-12 months. Above 4.0 , even if biopsy is negative one is always in doubt every few months. Every time PSA comes to be high one wonders what is going on in prostate.
I am going to have my PSA repeated in 2-3 months. If it comes higher than 4.0 , instead of biopsy it seems better to just remove the prostate. If I do that I have to check what such a removal will do to my life span even though it may affect the sex life. _________________ ANIL |

Anil:
Do not have surgery done until you get a positive biopsy, no matter what. The biopsy is no big deal. Removal will not hurt life span, but it may affect sexual function and urinary continence. If you do have a positive biopsy, get the nerve sparing from an active urologist, someone that does one or two a week, like myself. |

Helllo There,
Just a note to support Dr. Leo's comment on anxiety. Confusion may also go hand and hand with frustration. We can be blocked from reaching a certain goal and then frustration sets in. You want and need information NOW. Add fear to that and our days and nights can get rough. I agree with Dr. Leo get the biopsy; long periods of waiting can result in too much emotional pain for you and your loved ones.
I send you my best wishes for a good outcome. If you have any specific diffficulties a theraist can help with write back. Get all the support you can. If you do need some further information after the biopsy I can recommend a few practical and easy to read books. Let us hope you will not need them!
Regards,

DavidCohen, Thank you very much for your advice on biopsy. I think I will do that as you have suggested after getting another PSA reading in 2-3 moths. I hope that will be ok as I have read the cance spreads very slowly.
pat devitavessa, thank you for your kind words and good wishes..
I am still investigating where in my area I can get Anti-Malignin Antibody -- A Screening Test for Cancer, just as a back up test. _________________ ANIL |
