Bone Pain

My grandfather has lung cancer that has spread extensively to the bones. His worst pain is in his hip and his shoulder. This is relatively new (the past month or so). He was prescribed Norco (is that the same as Lortab?) a few weeks ago, and he takes it 4 times a day. It helps him get through the day, but he still has pain in his shoulder. His doctor just prescribed oxycodone for him to take twice a day with the hydrocodone to use as needed for break through pain. I hope this works better for him. Is there anything I need to be careful about or to tell my grandparents as far as things to watch out for now that he's on these two medications?

I am very sorry about your grandfather's cancer. I have read your other posts about him and am very sorry that it is so advanced.

Oxycodone is a reasonably safe pain med but it is an opiate so it has some of the same dangers that other opiates have. However, I don't think your grandfather has anything to worry about.

The main danger if he is taking the oxycodone is that he could accidentally overdose. It is helpful if someone else (your grandmother maybe?) would help him keep track of his medications.

Thank you so much. We can always use prayers. I'm glad it's a safe medicine. My grandma does help my grandpa with his meds and my mom will also monitor it once they are living with her (in 2 weeks.) My grandpa said the oxycodone seems to be working better than the hydrocodone, so that's good.

Take any bone pain or tenderness very seriously. Contact your health care provider if you have any unexplained bone pain. Seek out prompt medical attention for correct diagnosis and proper treatment whenever you experience bone pain and tenderness.
