As a 62 yr. oldjI have recently been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer inthe UK and will hosrtly have to decide on my treatment options. I have read various articles on web sites including USA and now kbow that all carry risks of side effects. I'm undecided as to how to proceed or how to ascertain firm assurance that I'm in the best hands. I had a TURP in the mid-nineties followed by regular PSA checks which resulted in a negative biopsy in 2001. Last Christmas my latest PSA check showed areading of 7.2 up from 6.4 which itself was a rise on previous readings. Subsequent core biopsy proved positive for a "small cancer" which may or may not have been there in 2001. My Gleason score is 3+3. The MRI scan indicated that the cancer is so far localised and my urologists will recommend radical surgery with or without hormone treatment either prior to or after surgery. I'm primarily concerned about long term side effects such as incontence (single and double) rectal burn etc. Can you please help enlighten me.

If the surgeon does a nerve sparing surgery, and does a few of them a month, your chances are good of sexual function, and even better for urinary continence. You will not have a problem with rectal incontinence. If you don't get an experienced surgeon, you will probably have problems in one of both areas. I had the surgery done, so you can email me privately if you want.
