My mother-in-law is eighty-five and had breast cancer about twenty years ago. She recently disclosed that she has cancer in her other breast (undiagnosed) but hadn't told her children and wasn't going to do any thing about it. The upshot is that now two months later she has a lump in her throat which has finally sent her to a doctor. He took a biopsy and and the results will be back Christmas Eve wrote "probable CA". Is this a normal length of time for a biopsy? I have talked with the family about advanced directives and hospice care. What else can I do? They are in the south and I live in New York.

Hello there
In reply to yr question...I am not sure of the wait time for a pathology result, but usually they are done fairly quickly if there is a chance of a cancer diagnosis? When my Bro had his tumour biopsied they actually did the pathology whilst he was still on the op table. He had a brain tumour though.
I'm sorry to hear about your MIL, am I right in thinking that you live the closest to your MIL? How did the other family members react to this awful news? This is obviously a very challenging time for you.
I hope you don't mind but I'm going to move your post to the Breast Cancer thread as this was the initial diagnosis for your MIL all those years ago & as you said she has had a recent recurrence in her other breast. This thread is well supported by forum members & I'm certain they will offer their support & advice which is what you are in need of at the mo.
My prayers & thoughts are with your MIL & family.
Cheers, Angie.

ginviking, so sorry to hear about your MIL. Yes, this is within the normal range for a biopsy. Some do come back sooner, but this is normal.

Don't give up on your MIL so quickly. Not time for hospice, yet. If MIL agrees with having treatment, they will give her treatment which will keep her going for a while. I know that she is 85, but she still has the chance to live out her years. Having cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence. Just be as supportive as you can at this difficult time in her life. I wish her the very best.
