My husband has PC, went through Cyberknife in April and is now being treated with chemo. First it was 7 weeks on and one off; followed by 3 weeks on and one off since about June. Every morning he has some reallly bad Hacking spells and just told me that he is coughing up blood and feels like he is choking on it. At night he says he feels like his esophagus is dried up. Is this serious or can it be related to the chemo? Please help.

Hi Diane, I am so sorry about your husband's cancer. The coughing up blood is not a usual side effect of the chemotherapy. One indirect connection is the the chemo might be depleting his platelets so that any damage could cause bleeding. For sure, contact his medical team. Call them up soon and ask them if they would like to see him today.

Thank you for responding. I called the oncologist and the nurse told me to get some robitussin and a humidifier (which I did--very expensive)...and last night ran the humidifier but he hasn't gotten up yet so I don't know if it helped. The onocologist didn't seem concerned. We just moved here to Lansdale, PA from Florida for better cancer care and have an appointment with a family dr. on Monday (chemo in the a.m. and dr in the afternoon). I feel like you do, though....I think there is something more serious. What do you think? The nurse took it rather lightly though....Diane
P.S. A big hug to you .....every survivor is an inspiration to others...

Your move is a big clue. I imagine that in Florida you did not need to use the heart as much as you are in PA. The heater in your home is removing a good part of the moisture thus causing morning cough and associated bleeding. It happens to a lot of us during the winter.

Jim. Thank you for posting that. I never thought about the change in climate being a factor. Joe is getting so depressed over everything right now. He has been going through chemo for over 6 months (following cyberknife treatment) and there is no end in site...at least the drs make it seem like it will go on and on. He is VERY emotional.....and he wants no part of Christmas at all (although we are faithful Catholics) ...no decorations..etc.....He cries at the drop of a hat and I don't know how to help him. I don't know what to say to him. I am so afraid that he is just giving up....Chemo is so rough....and changing cities (Florida to Pennsylvania) and drs. right in the middle has made it harder. He makes these rash decisions at the drop of the hat (2 major ones ever since this started)...I am so lost and afraid. Diane

Diane< i am so sorry you are going through this.
is there a hospice facility near you? they have great counsiling on site and can probably help you on how to handle this situation.
No one knows what to say to someone who is dying and they are entitled to how they feel i guess...he is probably angry right now..there are so many phases a person goes through.

Can you ask the dr if chemo is helping? if its not you might just want to quit, and it could possibly be making him more tired and more emotional?
I dont know,,just a thought.

try to have a merry christmas ok?
