My dad was diagnosed with PC December 2007. He had the whipple surgery in Feburary and several rounds of chemo and radation. He went in for a body scan in September and they found no evidence of cancer. The past couple of days he has been complaining on stomach pain. Is it possible that his cancer has returned that soon ?

Kitty01, I am very sorry about your father's Pancreatic Cancer. PC is one of the worse types of cancers a person can have because of its impact on quality of life and because there are so few treatment options for it. Yes, your father's pain might be due to a recurrence. But it might just be due to the impact of the original cancer. It could also be caused by many other things. I suggest that your father see his own doctor as soon as possible.

Regards,

He did go to the dr on Friday and they told us that the stomach pain was from the surgery that was done in Feb. He got a call today and was told the his CA-19 was elevated to over 200! I do not understand before he had the surgery it was only in the 100 range. How from September to now has a tumor grown that is bigger than the orgianl one! He has no syptoms, he is not jauncied. He has gained all but 5 poounds of the weight that he orginally lost after the surgery? Did the dr miss somethinng? He is going to MD Anderson Houston tommorow.

Mom had resection 9/07 w/ Chemo/radiation - some post surgery. Stomach pain July/Aug '08. New growths (stomach & intestines) confirmed in 9/08 via CT and PET scans. Undergoing new Chemo.

New scans will confirm one way or the other........but don't skip them.

If you don't mind me asking what were her levels? The dr he saw last week told him that it could be scar tissue that causing the pain. He stopped chemo the last week in August. His dr that he saw friday told him today that he did not know what the protcol was and we called MD Anderson immediately afterward. He just had a colonoscopy in September and everything came back fine. Did her eating habits change before she was diagnosed with the stomach tumor? Is this something that can be treated in time? I am trying to stay positive but it is getting difficult.

K01:

Levels - For over two years, I have never seen, heard or discussed "levels' with her PCP, Surgeon or Oncologists. It had all been based on scans and biopsy.

Pain - They never said scar tissue could be the reason. There was a guess that it could have been gall stones because they showed up on the scans. The pain has gone away for some reason even though the growths have not really changed.

Eating - As a senior, her eating habits were not great & after the operation, she was overcautious about glucose levels. Then when the pain started it got worse. Plus without 75+% of her pancreas the loss of the naturals enzymes affected digestion.
She ignored advice from me, PCP and nutritionist to increase calories but I forced (her word) certain changes ie; swapping out low calories for higher calorie choices, she gained weight. But it has been a struggle.

Treatment - Really can't say since every case is different. But I would not "accept" one Drs opinion about "scar tissue".........the CT & PET scans of the abdomen with CONTRAST chemical has given the detail for an accurate diagnosis.
