I just lost my dear mother to pancreatic cancer on March 20th, 2009. She was in hospital for 16 days, after receiving the news from her GP that catscan results revealed a large mass on her pancreas and several mets on her liver. She was not only my mother, but later in our relationship together, my best friend.

I was the first one to assist my mother in the early stages of her symptoms and eventual news of her condition. My siblings came along shortly after my mother was admitted to hospital. We all were a bit stunned at how fast this disease took over and eventually ended my mother's life. This experience is without a doubt the hardest thing that I have had to experienced in my 48 years to-date. I myself am a cancer survivor (ovarian) of some 35 years now but my own experience of cancer was a walk in the park compared to the short bit of hell that my mother endured.

Nothing can prepare you for the utter feelings of helplessness and hopelessness in watching your loved one go through this kind of thing, knowing there's not a damn thing you can do to help but be there as their advocate, protector and comforter. I am consoled only by the fact that my mother is in a place of peace at this point. The journey has been a tough one, disease-wise but also in the experience of having to deal with a health-care system a times that defies logic and a certain level of compassion from some quarters. This part of the journey has ended for my mother, and now it's time for the healing to begin for me.

Thanks for reading, and for creating this wonderful place to share information, be of support and for patients and caregivers alike to give a voice to their fears, concerns, losses, but also their triumphs.

Thankyou brainman. I am slowly moving forward. I have learned so much about this particular cancer that I wasn't aware of until now. Even with my own cancer past, and that of my father's - Colon Cancer ... You'd think with this much cancer in our family, that we'd have a bit of a leg-up on this disease by now, but instead it's been like a new experience each time. I survived for a reason. I've yet I think to discover just what the best outlet for what that reason is, but I must be getting close to it Smile
