Hi,

I am a 29-year old female who two weeks ago had 5 moles removed. One of the moles came back with a dx of a "0.4mm superficial spreading melanoma." I am going to go to MD Anderson and have further consultation before they remove the area.

I have a couple of concerns. Is this really the dx or can they not detect whether or not it has metasticized until after we get the whole are removed? How quickly will it spread? How accurate is the original pathology report? Could this be a symptom of something greater?

I feel like the lady off of Love Story with one of those stories that it seemed like nothing but then we lost her at such a young age. It feels very lonely since there are not a lot of people my age with the issue. Can anyone give me your thoughts?

Mel is very unpredictable but you have a very low risk tumor for metatases... if not ulcerated and less than Clark's Level 4 (which is likely), you're likely going to be Stage IA..... survival stats are 98% at 5 years and 97.3% at 10 years.... very low risk tumor based on the info you provided..... You'll probably never have to deal with this again.....Good Luck and God Bless,
