My husband was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in March 2003. Since then he has had one series of radiation (39 treatments) and completed two courses of chemotherapy. In April 2004 the cancer had spread to his liver, lungs and shoulder, he then had his second course of chemotherapy with a Petscan in September 2004 proclaiming him to be free of all cancer. By November he started having pain in his right side and an ultrasound examination in Jamaica determined that the cancer had returned and that it was worse than previously.
He returned to Miami for treatment in late December following another Petscan that indicated the presence of cancer in the neck and pelvic areas, his lungs, spleen, liver and abdomen. Since January he has been having chemo once every two weeks. A Ct. Scan two weeks ago indicated the the cancer has been reduced in all the places except the liver, where it has worsened, despite the fact that the pain is reduced.
He is now on Tarceva - chemo taken orally.
My question is can he take milk thistle for the liver while he is taking this chemo? Will there be any adverse or contradictory effects to the drug?
His oncologist (apparently) does not know or is not interested in herbal medications. Are there any health foods or herbal medications can I give him to improve his situation? The radiation destroyed many of his salivary glands hence there is a limit to the types of foods he can take.
Thank you for any advice you can give.
The whole situation has left me very tired and exhausted since I have been with him for the whole time and during this period I have lost my mother - she died as a result of a stroke - thankfully I was home when she died and was able to arange her funeral before coming back to Miami to continue his treatment. I try to walk everyday, but after three years I am truly tired.
