Hi everyone,
Just an update on my mother in law, Mary Alice age 63. She was diagnosed with inoperable Glioblastoma Multiforme IV last Juy. Since then she has undergone chemo and radiation which she took like a champ. She had to use a walker for quite some time now as she had no strength in her complete left side. Within the past month she lost her left side completely and was bound to her wheelchair. She seemed to be doing okay, no one thought it was coming so quick, but we are grateful that it is happening like this. We truly believe she held out for mother's day. Oh did we have a great mother's day. She went to church, ate two full meals, we had some laughs and she watched us kids plant her flower garden. George(my father in law) put her to bed Sunday night at 10pm and she slept through the night for the first time in forever and she's been still since then. We thought she just had a big day and the doctor came over and explained to us that she has began the dieing process. She's opened her eye once since then and she groans a little when we read to her or roll her over to change her. Hospice came in right away and they've taken her off all of her medications including the anticoagulant for the blood clot that had formed in her leg. I was surprised to find out that they would not be giving her any liquids or nutrients through an IV but when the nurse explained that it only prolongs life(if you could call her state right now life) so that makes complete sense. So now she lays there in the comfort of her home breathing heavily until she's gone. I just wish we could tell when she's awake or sleeping. I of course share this experience with you all for comfort and especially to those of you who are going through the same thing and wonder what could come next.

Heather,
They say that hearing is the last thing to go so just keep talking to her...she can hear you! Even though you know she'll no longer suffer, this is a very difficult time filled with mixed emotions. You want the dying process to go quickly but at the same time, you don't want her to go. There comes a point when you just have to tell them that they don't need to fight anymore that it's OK to go. I've been there to walk my dad and my sister to the other side...it's tough.
On a practical note, there's a process called "mottling" that occurs when death is within hours. You'll notice bluish streaks that begin at the feet and work its way up as the time gets closer. It seemed morbid to me to keep checking how far the mottling had progressed but on the other hand, it was reassuring to us that the body was doing what it was supposed to do and they would soon be at peace.
Family is so important during this difficult time. I hope you are all close knit and if not, that this will help bring the family closer.
