November 5, 2009

Mama’s last chemo was on October 7th, and then she had a scan last Tuesday, October 27th and a doctor’s visit on Thursday, October 29th. I was unable to go to her appointment due to work obligations, so I got “the story” from Mama and Daddy. So, today I was able to accompany Mama to the doctor’s office, so that I could get “the story” myself.

The scan showed improvement in some areas, no change in some areas, and progression in some areas. He didn’t give any details, and I don’t know if Mama even wanted any. But, like the doctor said, she has had mixed results from the chemo. He asked her if she wanted to take a chemo break, and she said yes. It’s her choice, not mine. I respect her wishes. She asked him about the oxygen and he told her that she only needed to use it when she felt she needed it, like if she’s having SOB. Her lab work today was great! Her blood counts and creatinine were good, her blood sugar was good. She’s gained weight – still enjoying eating (no more mouth sores!) and as long as she has an apetite, I will allow her to eat whatever she wants. It’s all about her…

We went to see my daughter cheer last weekend – afternoon game with beautiful weather! Well, Mama actually watches the game – she loves football! I watch some of the game, but spend a lot of time taking pics and videoing my baby! My friend Nikki went with us and we all had a great time! We went by my daughter’s apartment for a brief visit after the game and we were home by 7:00 pm. We will be going again on Sat, Nov 14th for the second-to-last home game. Daddy’s going deer hunting that weekend, so it will be a “girls” weekend! Very Happy

I think Mama feels “free” since she’s getting a chemo break and no oxygen. I think that’s great, and we’re gonna enjoy her freedom!. On Saturday, I’m going to take her to lunch and a movie. She’s feeling like some Mexican food – ask and you shall receive! I will just take each day and enjoy her to the fullest!

We are scheduled to go back to see the doctor on Dec 3rd to discuss options and decide what’s next. The doctor mentioned the possibility of trying a second line treatment, but then there’s the issue of harsher toxicity and poor quality of life. I dread the day that the cancer rears its ugly head again, and pray for the strength to get through it when it happens. Until then, I thank God for these precious days with my wonderful mother…

I continue to pray for you all. Enjoy the good days, and may you have strength on the not-so-good days.
