My Mom was just diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer after going to th ED for what we thought was gallbladder. She is 81. She was ready to begin Gemzar but ended up back in the hospital with a large bowel obstruction two weeks after diagnosis. They had to do emergency surgery or she would have died. Now she has a colostomy and an open wound to heal which dashes the hope of chemo right now. She is very weak and now trying to heal from surgery will make things that more difficult for her. She is going to be in the hospital for a while as she can't eat yet. Really she hasn't eaten in almost a week. Before all of this she was very tired and having some pain and nausea but otherwise ok. She wanted to see her grandson graduate from high school next June but now that looks more grim

Thanks Adagio. I asked the hospital docs to consult Oncology so we can find out if chemo is still a viable option or not. At least that way we can plan as I want her to be comfortable.

She is having quite a bit of nausea and back pain. I suppose that is part of this??

My grandmother and MIL both had this. My grandmother's was way too advanced for anything. You name an organ, it was in it. From the time she was diagnosed till the time she died was 4 days. My MIL thought she just had a bad stomach flu. The doctors found it when it was in stage 2. She couldn't have surgery because it was wrapped around her aorta. From the time she was diagnosed till the time she died was 15 months. Both of them in their 70's. My MIL had chemo and radiation. But Looking back compared to what my husband is getting now,(stage 3 rectal cancer) the doctors were just doing "mercy treatments". They both had A LOT OF PAIN. If you have a good doctor/hospital they will make them very comfortable. This is going to be very hard and fast. I will be praying for you.
