I'd like to share with you our story about a very special Marathon Relay Team that we organised for the Cork City Marathon (Ireland) last Monday.
The team consisted entirely of Cancer Survivors; Three prostate, Two testicular and One Oesophogeal Cancer. The five leg relay was run in parallel with the full marathon. (OK, we had six - we doubled up on the final leg - nobody in the group was going to be left out!)
The original idea had a threefold aim;
1 To raise the profile and awareness of Cancer Survivors
2 To inspire those facing Cancer, along with their families
3 To make contact with other active cancer survivors and
4....maybe raise a bit of money.
On a scorching hot day for a marathon - 24C - we'd only been used to max temps of (if we were lucky) 15C - the 'C Team - Cancer Survivors' crossed the finish line in 4:01:24, 406th team from 1139 finishing teams!
Former Cork hurling All-Star Joe Deane, a Testicular Cancer (2004) Survivor, took the first 5.2 leg, completing it in 48 mins. Later that day, Joe turned out for his club in a (gaelic) hurling club match.
John Ryan, also a Testicular Cancer (2009) Survivor, took the 5.5 mile second leg, covering it in 50 mins. Notably John, who only had his surgery last January, finished his radiation treatment only at the end of April, 5 weeks before the event!!!
Dan Byrne, Oesophogeal Cancer (2002) Survivor, got the third 3.2 mile leg, completing it in 31 Mins.
John Quigley, Prostate Cancer - Survery (2008) Survivor took the 4th 5.9 mile leg in 45 Mins.
Joe Dineen, Prostate Cancer - Radiation (2008) Survivor did the final "glory leg", running with Mossie Shanahan Skin Cancer (2003) Survivor, brought us in to the finish, completing the final 6.4 mile leg in 67 minutes, during the hottest part of the day.
The team were interviewed by Setanta Ireland TV and the Marathon coverage is going out on Monday June 8th on Setanta Ireland TV at 20:00 Irish time.
We hope to expand the 'C team - Cancer Survivors' network, to do other events and continue inspiring others.
The full Team met up with 300 metres to go came into the finish together. inthe few weeks leading up to the event, the team had received a lot of press coverage, so the lift and acclamation we received coming down the last couple of hundred metres was absolutely fantastic.
