I say ditto about an inhaler. My husband was on Ativan after breathing function tests showed he would be helped by this. Also he took Mucinex 2X per day to keep the secretions thinned. We also had a firm, small pillow for him to hold against the area when he'd start with the coughing. Stay plenty hydrated to make the mucus as easy as possible to get out when you cough.

I'd get a referral, if you need one, to the pain clinic. This does effect your overall well being and you should not be left to sit in constant pain. We had hoped that there were alternative therapies to more pain killers at the pain clinic and were disappointed that it was just more drugs. You are being short-changed in that department.

Between the nerves, the ribs being monkeyed around with, and the chest tube, that's a recipe for pain. Nobody who has encountered this situation thinks anything of you commenting on the pain. It's real and it hurts!! Shocked My hubs was a bear of a man who went through gosh awful amounts of chemo, but it was this silly pain that really got to him. Just about the time we hit the pain clinic, his pain started to subside a bit. He always had random pains and odd feelings in those areas though for the rest of his life.

Good luck and let us know if you are able to get into the pain clinic. I think that sounds like your best option if the surgeon is being a lunkhead.

God bless and hugs,
PBJ

Hi Gary,
My husband was on oxycodone 10 mg every 12 hours and then took oxycontin every 4-6 hours for breakthrough pain.It seemed to work pretty good because he had the long acting pain working all the time. Maybe you could ask your GP for it since your surgeon really does not seem to very effective with pain control. If you have a good relationship with your GP then ask him. Also with this surgery my husband got very depressed at times and could not stop crying. I think this goes with the surgery. My husband still has some numbness and they said it might take up to a year to go away. I hope you can get some relief from your pain.
