My Dad has been on TB medication for the last 19 days, to no effect. Symptoms that he has had since Jan '09 were Fever, Weight Loss, Cough, etc..

The consultant (Dr Ashfaq Hassan) who did the TB misdiagnosis, today confirmed it to be Cancer - still doing further tests to see what kind of Cancer it is, but they found Cells in the Lung & he also has Lung Fluid that they have been draining on & off...

He is not a smoker, thoug he used to smoke until his 30's, so not sure if it will turn out to be lung cancer...They are also checking the bone..

The problem is, I live thousands of miles away (London) from my Dad (India)

I am so worried now, as my Dad is 71, with high blood pressure, kidney problems, etc...& dont know what is going on with the tests & whether they will get the diagnosis & render the effective treatment...It is slowly driving me crazy.

I'm off to India this weekend for a few days to see him before they start any treatments, he is already very weak with the Fever & weight loss...

I hope they are able to diagnose him soon and offer a treatment plan if there is one available. Good luck on your trip over there. Will he have anyone close to him that can help care for him? Good luck with everything!

I just spoke to the Doc over the telephone, he confirmed today that my Dad is in Stage 4 Lung Cancer (I'm not sure which type), with a tumour in the lung & it has spread to the bones & liver. They did the Pet Scan today which gave them all the info they needed...

He advised me that Dad has less than 3 months to live - I am in total shock!

With the Chemo they may extend this to 12 months, but theres no guarantees.

Need to get a visa now for my flight out to India to see my Dad...

My Ma must be devastated...

I am so sorry. Sad My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 that spread throughout and lived for almost 7 months. Hopefully your dad will be around long enough for you guys to spend some quality time together. I am so sorry... Big hugs to you.

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts.

Well, Dad started the Chemo yesterday, he is on carboplatin/gemzar (gemcitabine) - so far he seems to be responding well to the treatment as he sounded much better over the telephone...& I'm a bit more relieved than yesterday, that maybe this will help extend his life a bit....

Dad is quite tough & has always been a fighter so I am hopeful that he will fight this for a while yet....

Unfortunately the Cancer has spread considerably from his lung - Spine, Liver, etc so I am kind of upset that we didnt catch this earlier on when there was perhaps a chance to minimise the tumour, etc...

Well, its been a harrowing few months, I've decided to move to India in a few weeks to give support to my Dad & my family & in the process of uprooting my wife & kids from London to move to India.

But, in the meantime, had some very positive news overall to share -

Dad has had one dose of Chemo a few weeks ago, he didnt take to it well & had to have Platelets & a live Blood Transfusion. In the preceding few weeks we nearly lost him, as his counts were too low & there was an infection in the lung due to this...

He spent practically a month in hospital, before during & after Chemo. After he was discharged from Hospital, he started to regain his strength. He had lost 10 kgs prior to hospitalisation, but in the last 3 weeks has put on 3kgs.

Since he hadnt had a biopsy, he was due for a Biopsy today. The Doc did a scan &......found that the Large Mass of Tumours in the Lung had shrunk by 95%!

He also found that the metastasis to the liver had shrunk significantly.

I'm going out for a drink tonight to celebrate, as this is remarkable news..

Dad is gaining weight all the time, his tumours have shrunk remarkably, his fever has gone & the fluid in the lungs is only 15% present. Seems like a miracle & I'm so happy that I will be able to spend some quality time with him & that my kids will be able to see him...I thank our Lord above who appears to be similing down on my Dad at this moment.

Hey nickaugust,

This was wonderful news to wake up to this morning! Your father is lucky to have you as his son - willing to do all that you can to support him on this roller coaster ride. I pray for a safe move and transition for your family.

Please keep us posted on your Dad's progress. I will also have a drink to celebrate!!!!! Wink

And please know that God is smiling down on your Dad ALL the time, even when things are not so good - He's surrounding His children with His loving arms every moment of our lives...

God Bless,

tp
