hi, my son has been having biopsies and a ct scan as they thought he had sarcoma(soft tissue cancer) , last biopsy came back clear of cancer but showed he has bone infection. his blood tests showed up normal apart from low haemoglobin levels, however he has been having nosebleeds quite alot lately and we found out yesterday that my husbands uncle died of leukiemia aged 32,his first symptons were nosebleeds.... am i being paranoid but could they have misdiagnosed my son with biopsy as they werent looking for leukiemia, hes under an oncologist who specialises in bone cancer so just feel like i could be being stupid.. should i mention this to his doctor??
i dont want doctor to think i'm an idiot but am so worried at moment for my son and dont want to leave it

Hi nicolar08, I do not want to alarm you with my father's story because you still can be cautiously optimistic since the biopsies have been negative. My father was very sick for a couple of years before they finally diagnosed him with AML. Mind you, he WAS going to a doctor. They did a bone marrow biopsy that came back clear. They took out his spleen. They checked everything possible. Finally, after months of not knowing and not getting the right treatment, a second biopsy revealed the cancer. I do not think you should think of yourself as paranoid first because your son might be like my father was and, more importantly, there is still something wrong with your son.

I am praying that the doctors will find out soon what is wrong with your son.

hi jim

well the latest news, we have just spent a spell in University college hosp. they put my son on iv antibiotics to see if they will improve this swelling, they have been having loads of meetings regarding my son as they are not convinced its osteomylities which they thought as culture growing in lab is not showing any bugs growing to indicate infection or in his bloods. they did chest xray to check for malignancy but that was clear thank god. we have been sent home with oral antibiotics which they have said might not do anything but they want to try and then we will get reviewed in clinic on the 4th sept. they keep telling me that both biopsies were clear of maglinancy but i dont think they are even convinced. i just keep thinking what can it be if its not an infection. after reading your story it makes me feel like they could be missing something. also they kept telling us his haemoglobin level was low in hospital ,it has been 10.5 for a while now which they say is only slightly low but not doing anything about it at moment.. ???

Hi Nicola. Often, as it was with my father, a diagnosis of Leukemia is a diagnosis of exclusion since so many other things can cause the same symptoms and there is no sure fire way to diagnose it. Even a biopsy is not always successful. Hang in there. This could be the bigging of a long and hard journey for you and your son.

As for his haemaglobin being low, yes, 10.5 is just slightly low but still safe. Mine went way bellow that before the doctor was concerned. Mine is still hovering around 11-12.
