Hi,
I have been trying to get a diagnosis for 5 months now. The usual suspects were Lyme Disease and Lupus, but I just tested high with the Kappa light chain test. My Kappa was high and Lambda was normal and the ratio was high. I have an elevated SED Rate, Globulin, and CRP. Plus an positive Rheumatiod Factor (RF).
I've been told with lupus you can have a high Kappa and Lambda but your ratio is normal.

My doctor wont talk to me for a month, he is out of the state, so i was wondering if anyone is familiar with this test and how reliable it is.

What all does this test for?
Thank you for your information and time.
i am a 21 yr old woman and until April completely healthy. Now I hurt so bad everywhere I had to quit my job and now I can hardly do day to day tasks.
Please help me.

Hi lorelei8. I am so sorry that you cannot talk to your doctor about this Sad. I certainly would not want to wait for a month!!! Your doctor does not have someone covering for him/her????

Since I know nothing about those tests, I defer to others to weigh in with their thoughts.

Thank you, I think that the real question I'm asking is if anyone had any simalar tests. With the Serum Free Light Chain Kappa and Lambda, and what thier doctor said. What came out of it.

I hope you've already found a good hematologist oncologist. I see that your in AZ. I would immediately call the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale to be tested for multiple myeloma. Dr. Keith Stewart heads the Cancer Dept and one of the top Dr's re: MM. http://www.mayoclinic.org/scottsdale/

If you do have MM, consider being treated at the Myeloma Inst. for Research and Treatment in Little Rock, AR. It's where I was treated and where even Dr. Stewart suggested for MM. MIRT is far and away the leader in the prognosis and diagnosis of multiple myleoma. They do more MM related transplants and treatments than most of the major cancer institutes combined. http://www.myeloma.uams.edu/

Most non-oncololgy doctors, ie, your primary care Dr. and even many hematolgists do not stay current on the subject.

After you get this resolved, get a good lawyer and sue the crap out of your current doctor.

Good luck.

Hi lorelei,

I think I am in a similar position as you in that I also have a KLC high and high Freelite chain ratio. So far, I am doing good.

I was diagnosed in 1999 with MGUS (see my post dated June 2009) when I was asking if I was Stage I or still MGUS. It is still confusing for me.

I did go to Arkansas and had numerous tests for MM, but back then, it all came back as MGUS. That was before the Freelite testing.

I also have Lyme disease diagnosed in 2002, have been treated and live a near normal life after having approximately two years of heavy abx, all oral. I do have residual symptoms some of which I know I will have forever. Actually, this diagnosis of MM in my future is way more frightening than Lyme disease.

I have another appointment in December with the oncologist to be tested again, and I go every 6 months, sometimes every 4. I do have a small M-spike, and he says to keep watching with exams every 6 months, unless things escalate.

I try not to think about the negative, but sometimes it's hard. Pat had answered my June 2009 post on a positive note about the new drugs allowing MM patients to live decades instead of years.

My best to you.
