From the Nov. 2008 Urology Times:

Univ. Calif. Davis researchers report patients treated with radiation for initial therapy for prostate cancer, and men treated with radiation for positive margins at radical prostatectomy have a 2-fold risk for developing subsequent bladder or colorectal cancers due to the radiation exposure.

Caution was urged as there are trends towards treating the positive margins before any rise in PSA confirms residual cancer.

Additionally, at the 2009 American Urology Assn meeting, stats were quoted describing a risk of 1% per year of developing a secondary cancer in the bladder or rectum due to radiation exposure.

Note that this study was done by a Urological Group with a vested interest in it's outcome. Secondary cancers were common in the early days of ERBT; but are now extremely rare with the new technologies like IMRT and Proton that target only the prostate and not surrounding tissues.

I am glad notme posted this because it totally refutes the earlier statements he posted by his urologist that "radiation WILL cause future cancers". Doubling ones risk is VERY FAR from "it WILL cause cancer".

Further, the results from current day radiation will no doubt show a significantly reduced risk.

I see this as positive news. There is also the point that I have no expectation of eternal mortal life. If I am in minority that get cancer from radiation in 15 years I will deal with it with the tools available to fight cancer 15 years down the road. if I don't get it then clearly something else will kill me. Thats just life Smile
