My son was dx with Embryonal Undifferentiated Sarcoma Feb 09 and underwent 6 rounds of chemotherapy followed by liver transplant and 2 more rounds of chemotherapy. As of 8-14-09 his scans revealed no evidence of disease; however, I am very discouraged by the fact that we have yet to find any survivors of this disease. I have no idea what to expect regarding recurrence, post chemotherapy effects, etc. Everything has happened so fast that I haven't even really had time to wrap my mind around everything.

Hi ethans mom. I am so sorry that your son has cancer. He must be young since Undiffentiated Embryonal Sarcomas are most often found in people under 30. Unfortunately, survival rate (living more that 5 years) is the lowest of any sarcoma but better than most primary brain cancers. The most recent statistics say that only 40% of patients live more than 5 years.

However, as I often say, a prognosis is just a statistical number. I do like to know my prognosis but only in oder to set some realistic goals for the things I still would like to do in whatever time I have left. Then I try to set my prognosis aside and do every thing I can to achieve those goals. It is harder than it sounds. Some of my goals are not that lofty: make contact with long lost friends (FaceBook has been very helpful), going to places that I love, doing things that I enjoy...

I encourage you to think of yourself as your son's personal "dream factory" and bring to him as much quality of life as possible but do not give up hope in a long term recovery. Remember, there are still 40% that do live more than 5 years. Your son will be one of those Wink

You and your son are in my thoughts and prayers.
