About 4 days after my moms first cycle of chemo she got so sick she could hardly function. Her labs were all wacky.. neutropenia landed her in isolation and she received two pts of blood. Her potassium and sodium were off the charts. She spent about 4 days in the hospital. I think one of the docs said when this happens after chemo -it normally sets it own pattern.
Does this mean since she got sick after cycle 1 she is likely to do so after each subsequent cycle? Does this happen to others? (thx) |

Hi Jalee,
It could be different with each cycle, but you'll definitely see the pattern emerge after a few cycles. Unfortunately, the effects of chemo are cumulative, so it could get worse as more cycles are done. I sure hope they get her counts under control now that they see how she reacts.
She was hit very hard with the crash and side effects. Most people don't get hammered quite that hard where they require hospitalization.
I wish her the best of luck to recover from this cycle. What drugs is she being given?
God bless,

| Her chemo is Cisplatin and Etopside.. she also has some pills to take on days 2 and 3 of chemo. I'm not sure what those are, Id have to look, then there is an anti-nausea med (as needed). She was sup to get Emend but we couldnt afford $100 a pill so they gave it to her in her IV. Worries me that they gave her flu and pnemonia shots before leaving the hospital wed so she was up and walking thurs and now shes back down. |

The cisplatin really hit my daughter hard. She had to have blood twice and platellets twice. They finally had to stop that one. Guess some people do ok on it.
It seems strange to me that they gave your mom a flu and pnemonia shot. They told us that under no condition could Terri have one. Different drs do it different ways I guess.
Lots of prayers and hugs to you and your family.

Thx Monell...
Yeah I was overwhelmed with the flu/pneumonia shot topic... what's one to do though.. lol
Because of the neutropenia/hospitalization the onc-doc reduced one of her meds by 10% and the other by 30% (cisplatin and etopside/VP-16). She completed that cycle Fri and so far is doing ok. She was bedridden before her dx and has never really come out of that. It's been really hard, everything, so Im really thankful this site exists. Seems to be one of the better, more active, msg boards online. Thx you guys!!! |
