Because of our mom's lung issue, we have been having a roller coaster ride in the last 2 months.

The story started about 2 months ago after a lung x-ray. The report pointed to high possibility of lung cancer because something very suspicious was found on the image of my mom's lung. And our emotional roller coaster journey officially started.

Then my mom was referred to have a CT scan. This time, the result came out much more positive. The suspicious stuffs seen by the x-ray was not found in the CT scan. And the report said that most likely my mom just have lung disease. So we were relieved (we understand lung disease should not be taken lightly. But still it is much much better than cancer).

But then when we met the oncologist, he said the CT scan result is good. But it could not completely rule out the possibility of cancer. He was also concerned about the high cancer index of my mom from a blood test. So he referred my mom to a lung specialist for a biopsy. We became very worried again.

Then the biopsy was done. We called for the result. We were told that nothing suspicious of cancer was found. So we thought finally the possibility of cancer had been ruled out by the biopsy and we were once again relieved and celebrated.

But then when we met the lung specialist today, we were told that the sample of the biopsy is very small. So it still cannot rule out the possibility of cancer. He said sometimes a cancer tumor is too small so a small sample biopsy like our mom had might not be able to catch it. And the only way to be more sure is to have a surgery to take out a larger sample for biopsy again. But because of the age and health condition of our mom, he did not recommend doing that. So he scheduled my mom for another CT scan in December to monitor it. So we are now back to ground zero and very worried again.

I hope someone can help me to understand the situation. Should we still be very worried? Or should we see what have happened as positive? I am very confused now.

It appears that the doctor found a particular suspicious area on your mom's lung and that the biopsy shows negative. However, the only solution is to have surgery to take it out, subject to the patient's general health to withstand the surgery.

For the time being, the doctor is buying time to wait till december hoping that the suspicious area goes away, and hope another CT scan at that time will show nothing. Good luck.
