My brother-in-law has CNS lymphoma and is being treated with Methotrexate chemo drug. He has to take sodium bicarbonate pills to keep his alkinality up but the piils have become the bain of his existence. He must take 6 tablets every four hours, they are big and a chalky which don't make them easy to take. It has become a real struggle - just the frequency and number of them to take.

Does anyone know of any alternative ways to ingest the pills? They are essentially baking soda so wonder if having them baked into something is an option or any other way.

Hi Seamus. I am very sorry about your BIL's cancer. You should make sure his medical team knows about his problems with this medication and ask them for advice on how to take it. Heat might destroy the effectiveness. Another source for this information is his pharmacist. They can make suggestions. Sometimes, you can grind the pills and mix them with something (i.e. apple sauce) but with some meds you are supposed to take the pills without grinding them. It is best to ask someone who knows the specifics about your BIL's medications and condition.
