My husband has been recently diagnosed, (gleason 6 age 61), 2 months ago. We have been doing research on treatments and reading forums. We live in Florida and was getting consultations on the Cyperknife treatment but are finding out our United Health Care HMO will not cover that procedure. We are filing along with the doctor an appeal. We have been reading that the MD Anderson center is highly recommended. What would make that center better than say the Moffitt Cancer center in Tampa, FL? We are looking for other alternatives before he makes a decision as to treatment. We have been reading comments on the HIFU but is that treatment available in the US and also about changing the diet and adding supplements as mentioned by John T. Could I get any feedback on any of my comments.
Thanks

Be very careful of Cyberknfe as it is a focal therapy and PC is a multifocal disease. (in more than one spot. A recent study of patients considering focal therapy had a 3D mapping biopsy. 61% were found to be multifocal and would have failed a focal therapy. Cyberknife s very useful for other cancers, but not for PC.

I sent you a reply, but somehow it was deleted. Check out http://www.nyhifucenter.com/. If you want to know more ask me on the HIFU thread. _________________ 55 years old, PSA 6, Gleason 6, T1c, 6 of 10 cores positive HIFU 9/25/09 |

| U.S. News and World Report has rated M D Anderson #1 for, I think, 10 years. It's the hospital I chose, but, I'm of the opinion that Moffit is also an excellent choice. |

There was a recent study posted on the New Prostate Cancer Info Link that said that there were no differences in cure for low grade, non agressive PC among any of the treatment centers. Local community hospitals had the same cure rate as major cancer centers.
With high grade or agressive PC, going to a cancer center of excellence greatly improved the survival rates over being treated at a community hospital.
This got me thinking, if the cure rates for low grade PC is equal among treatment options and also among all treatment centers it may be that the nature of the non agressive PC has more to do with the cure rates than the treatment option or where it is done.

That's why the FDA doesn't want to approve HIFU. Who would go for surgery if you could cure cancer with ultrasound? _________________ 55 years old, PSA 6, Gleason 6, T1c, 6 of 10 cores positive HIFU 9/25/09 |
