I'm 49 (50 in five days) and my urologist told me my PSA has been 2.9 on two blood tests taken a year apart. He did a rectal exam and thought he might have detected something on my prostate, a possible small bump. He wants to do a biopsy. Also relevant: my father died of prostate cancer about four years ago at the age of 71.

I'm not sure about the biopsy. The PSA seems pretty low given my age and from talking to people who've had the procedure, this biopsy is no walk in the park. It looks like I can expect to bleed for that day after it's done, and it's apparently extremely painful even with the pain shots.

What do people more experienced with prostate cancer think in this situation? I wasn't convinced the young doctor really felt anything on my prostate, he seemed a bit uncertain and checked it for a while. Given this limited information, does anyone have any thoughts on proceeding with the biopsy or not? What has been your experience with this biopsy?

Hi yardbird! Very Happy! Don't be anxious about the biopsy process. I'm sure the doctor will explain it to you and tell you what to do and what to expect on the process.

in case of doubt, go for the biopsy, as the consequence of not doing that may be serious.
