I'm scheduled for Robotic prostate removal tomorrow morning. For the last 5 days I have had a very slight sore throat & a bit of a runny nose. When the hospital called Friday to give me arrival time for surgery, the nurse asked if I have a cold or flu. I told her about my symptoms. She told me to call my surgeons answering service if I get a temp of 100 degrees or higher. As of this morninmg, still no temp & very, very little coughing. My question for those who have been through surgery is, should I cancel? Second question is, if I don't cancel, will they still do surgery? At this point, I just want to get it over with. I would appreciate any thoughts, especially based on facts. Thank you & I'm sorry time is of the essence here.

With your mild symtoms, I'd say that there shouldn't be a problem at all. This could even be from stress/anxiety or allergies. If your temp stays down and you otherwise feel fine, you should be ready for surgery tomorrow. For today, take Vit C and go about your business, get enough rest, drink fluids, esp. water and OJ. One doc I talked w/ years ago would prescribe wearing either a neck warmer or turtleneck to bed when his patients had a sore throat--this really does help, b/c it warms your throat and so makes that area less hospitable to viruses and bacteria--too hot for them to live/multiply.

If you are not worse tomorrow, then go on in for surgery, altho definitely let the staff know about your symptoms when you get there. It does happen that patients cancel surgery at the last minute, so don't worry about that part.

I hope things go well for you tomorrow--speedy healing!

I agree with Robyn, go ahead with your surgery and get it over with~~then you'll feel better.

It's probably just stress-induced, unless you're having fever & chills.

Drink some tea or even hot water with lemon, if you don't like tea.

Try not to think (yea right!) about the surgery, go for a long walk or to a movie to take your mind off it.

Good luck tomorrow, it'll be over before you know it!

Best wishes, as always,

Jean

Thanks for the replies. It could be stress, but I think it is a cold. Fortunately, my wife & I both had flu shots a couple of weeks ago & we're old enough to have a natural immunity to the H1N1 flu. My wife & I both have the same symptoms, I just hope I don't start coughing after surgery, it might hurt a little! I am definitely not looking for a reason to postpone this surgery. It's ironic, as I get closer I am more determined than ever to get it over with! I've been through a lot of indecision since I feel healthy & my biopsy shows cancer in only 1 core. Some would say that with such a small sample I should do the WW thing. However, my Dad died of PC & I have that high PSA problem. In addition it's been 4 years of PSA rising from 6.0 & 3 negative biopsies before this positive 1. In fact, I should feel lucky to be in such a good position when I consider what so many of youi have been through! Thanks to all of you who post on this forum. You inspire me!

I'll keep you posted after surgery.

Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow. I would rely on the health care professionals to let you know if you should proceed or not. Proceed as if it will happen and let the situation fall where it may. It is amazing to me how stress can bring on a cold. I usually get one before I travel. I'm hoping the psychological suggestion of your situation won't affect me!
Let us know how it goes! Mine is a week from Thursday.

You'll probably see this after surgery rather than before. Good luck!

I think by now you've probably found out that the clean out prep for surgery took your mind off the sniffles, LOL! Nothing to worry about, I'm sure, just tell your surgical team.

See you on the other side.

Well guys, no more prostate! Surgery took longer than expected almost 5 hours. Surgeon had trouble getting prostate to release. Dox thought this was a result of the 4 biopsies. It's 8 & 1/2 hours since I came out of operating room. Some pain but they give me morphinre. Don't like stockings. Doc says he saved both nerve bundles. This seems to be a great hospital but since it's my first time ever in a hospital I have nothing to compare witj. Thank God for Blackberry so I can pist from room.

Great to hear from you so soon! I'm looking forward to your postings of the first few days post surgery. I met with my surgeon today so it's beginning to feel real for me. How's your pain with the morphine?

Thanks to a great hospital & great info from you guys on the forum I am in pretty good shape. Morphine is pretty good. I don't have a pump but they give me syring via IV every 3 hours. I wii keep you all posted. Also, appreciate all prayers even though I'm a stranger to you. For the wives out there you can help a lot. My poor wife was here from 6 am till almost 9 pm. She is a great person.

Glad to read that you're up and posting so soon.

Last September, I had a huge ugly liver op and posted the following day from their lounge computer.

It nearly killed me to walk to the lounge but when my Hubby told me it was hooked to the internet, I dragged my IV, Pump and other 'accoutrements' down the hall.

Am I addicted to the internet?? Sure am~~~ lol

Hope you have an uneventful recovery and are back in your home soon.

Please keep us updated. Very Happy
