Hi all
Re SD's points
Recovery is very individual. If you are inactive and don't eat particulary well and don't really look after yourself, you can expect 12 months or more before you start feeling better and you may never recover fully. I always tell people about 6 months as this is about average. Young, fit and energetic people are usually running triathalons after a couple of months The best way to recover is Sleep and eat well and exercise rigourously. Forget about fancy supplements a good diet will give everything you need. Eating crap food and taking supplements will not do any good at all.
RE chemo brain the overt signs did not last too long. I seem to have some lasting deficits mainly peoples names..... My memory seems OK its just peoples names I have trouble with now.
RE survival times once again this is very individual. Survival times for NHL are not as good as HL for the reason that NHL is a cancer of older people. Of course you always get exceptions but generally NHL strikes people in their 60's. HL generally strikes people in their 20's although there is another peak in the over 40's. So naturally survival times for NHL is not as good as older people are more prone to dying than younger people and overall survival times only take death into account, whether that be by the cancer in question or other causes such as heart attacks etc.
When I finished my treatment I was obssessed by survival rates, But I soon realized it was all academic and my interest in this has gone completely. The fact is we are all individuals and we will die when when do regardless of what the stats say.
RE joepets comment on 6 times I can only say Onya Joe Its completely unrealistic but I love it anyway. That would be like doing 100 rounds with Vitali Klitschko and bully for you thinking you can do that
Maynard Keenes once replied to a reporter who asked him what would happen at the end of the day ( this was during the great depression) he replied" at the end of the day we will all be dead" Or as the Romans said "mors vincit omnia" So relax, Don't worry , and be happy

Hi SD
By rigourously I meant religiously. Obviously someone your age will find it harder than a 20 year old, so a bit of common sense is required. A good workout will not do any harm.

ChemoMan: 50% improvement in chemo response due to exercise - this is amazing! It's worth advocating it to everyone before they start chemo.
Back to my original question:
Regarding my question about correlation between speed of response to chemo and survival rate my Onc is saying: "The only data that we have is that 85% of people with a normal PET scan at the end will remain in remission."
This is good enough for me.
Now back to the gym _________________ 61 y.o M, Diffuse large B cell NHL, stage 3. Lower back. Diagnosed Mid May 09. Completed 6 R-CHOP treatments on 9/8/09. In Remission: 10/19/09 |
