Hi everybody. I'm hoping to get some advice, and also to vent Smile My step-father was sick about 2 or 3 months ago. He thought he had pneumonia or bronchitis. The doctor did a chest x-ray on him. My step Dad never had pneumonia, got better and went on with life. Out of the blue, this past Thursday his family doctor calls him at work and tells him she has bad news. He has a 4 centimeter "lesion" on his upper left lobe of his lung/chest cavity. The thing that has me worried that it's cancer and not just a benign tumor or whatever is that before the doctor told him where this lesion was, my stepdad asked the dr. if it was on his left lung. He says it almost kind of burns and that it has been bothering him lately. He had a cat scan done yesterday and we're hoping to get more information tomorrow or Tuesday. My step-dad is only 44 years old, but he has smoked a long time. He just seems pretty sure it's lung cancer. I am so mad at this doctor for dropping the ball and waiting almost 3 months before she called and told him. Can that make a difference between life and death if it is cancer? Also, for those of you with lung cancer did you have any pain or burning sensation in your lungs prior to diagnosis? I am sick about this. I've cried my eyes out since I found out, and have read everything I can get my hands on. If he does have cancer what can I do to support him and my Mom? I realize I may be getting ahead of myself, but I'd rather expect the worst and hope for the best. The more information I have the better prepared I'll feel in order to support this great man. Thank you all for listening. God bless and keep all of us safe, strong and sane!

Hello

I would think that 3 months can make a difference, but it is impossible to know for sure. But the important part is that it was noticed and he is having an evaluation for this. Lung cancer treatment most often involves surgery, but what will likely happen next is a biopsy if the CT shows that it is a suspicious lesion. Also, many lung cancers present without any symptoms. They can cause pain, blood in the sputum, recurrent pneumonias, etc.

best regards,
Leo
