My dad has stage 4 colorectal cancer with mets to liver. His CT scan from last week showed that there is a spot on his chest area. The doctor cannot say if this is cancerous or not and unfortunately the CT film was not available for viewing today. How can they diagnose the lung spot as cancer? Do they have to do a biopsy or can they tell from the CT scan?

I believe a PET scan should be able to tell if it is cancerous. I am not sure about a CT scan.

When I first found out I had cancer, I had a CT scan show something on my liver. They couldn't tell if it was cancer. I don't remember them giving me as much barium as I have gotten in recent CT scans. I also don't remember them giving me the iodine (I was pretty out of it at the time). So it might not have been as thorough as it could have been. A few days later I did get a PET scan that showed it was just a non cancerous cyst.

i'm in doubt any cancer center would cut based just on pet results as false postives are not uncommon. they did needle biopsy to confirm my liver met and a colonspy to confirm the take up in my colon. liver was postive but false in colon..hope this helps. bruce
