Hello. I am so afraid I have melanoma.. I have a doctors appointment after new years, but would like some answers before that. I have been looking on sites for skin cancer and they all say the same. If the mole has the ABCDE warning signs it is cancer.. (http://www.skincancer.org/the-abcdes-of-melanoma.html) No exemptions.. I have two moles that have most of these warning signs, but is there no way these moles can be benign? Are ALL "good" moles symmetrical, small, of one color and round?? Are there no natural variations in people moles? If someone out there can help me on these questions I would be so grateful! I have no pain or bleeding.

You have an appointment. Wait for that before you start to panic. In the meantime do not spend time reading about possible melanoma on the Internet. It is by biopsy that the disease is identified.

All I can comment is that I have moles of all shapes and sizes on my back, and none are melanomas.

It's important to get your moles looked at and possibly biopsied, but most moles ARE NOT melanoma. And sometimes the ones that appear the most innocent are melanoma. Mine was a symmetrical flat small freckle.
The key is CHANGE. If they are changing, then it's something you want to get looked at. Cancer grows and changes.

Mlbjab is spot on....I had a colleague at work who had a mole on his head (which is bald and we live in Hawaii -- major sun exposure) that fit the ABCDs to a "T" .... and it wasn't melanoma upon pathology....

Conversely, my "wart" on the bottom of a toe didn't fit any of the ABCDs and it was a T3a melanoma (but it did "change" -- something popped up on clear skin)...

.... So the ABCDs are only a guide and not a complete one at that BTW since the "C" stands for color and omits "change"....

Don't stress until you have something to stress about...

Happy New Year
