My Mother who is 65 years old had a chest X-ray as part of her normal yearly check up. The Dr told her she had something near her trachea and ordered a CT scan. The CT scan showed a spot in her the upper right lobe of her lungs. He said it was about an inch (whatever that means) She is scheduled for a needle biopsy this week. We are all so scared and I have been reading all of the information on the internet which has scared me even more! She had a chest X-Ray last year that showed nothing abnormal.

She had a dime size tumor in her lungs 15 years ago and it was benign. She was a smoker at the time and immediately quit but has been around second hand smoke. She is asmatic and has had a cough but with no other symptoms. We live in Florida now but a few weeks ago she and my father went to Vegas and she said she didn't have the cough in the dry climate. Of course I am hoping it is benign but logically I am concerned about lung cancer. If it is then my next concern is the stage and if it has spread.

I guess my question is can a tumor this size be benign and can it be advanced stages without symptoms. My Aunt was diagnosed 3 years ago and had her lung removed and is doing well but my parents neighbor was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and only survived a few months. Any suggestion or thoughts are welcomed.

The answer to both is yes. But "chances" are the more progressed the cancer is the more symptons should appear.
Good luck to both of you

Thanks Debbie, As it turns out it was benign, Yeah!! The Dr called it a hematomas (sp?) I had read that hematomas' can double in size over a 14 year period and that is what makes me think it is the same tumor she had years ago and that it was just larger. The Dr couldn't find anything else so logic tells me it was the same one.

Thanks for your response. We have been very blessed with this outcome.

The only unfortunate part is that I just found out my cousin's best friend (who I dated briefly) has been diagnosed with a very rare and fast spreading form of lung cancer. His prognosis isn't very good and he is only 44. I am just heartsick, he is a very nice guy and has been friends with my cousin since they were babies.
