My father is 77 and has been dianosed with NSCLC for about 3 weeks.
He spends much of the time lying or sitting down and is sore from doing so, he often speaks of discomfort at his tailbone because his body's weight is centered there. Has anyone else encountered the same issue, how did you help it?

He also experiences extreme dry-mouth and cannot sleep for more than 1-hr straight without waking up. Can you share some ways of working around these symptoms? He is scheduled to start chemo (gemcitabine, cisplatin) soon and our family is concerned of how he might respond to the side effects of chemo too.

Can anyone give me some advice?
Thanks

It sounds as though your father may be suffering from the onset of pressure sore/s on his back. Prolonged sitting or laying can cause these. The soreness is a precursor of things to come of you do not get him to move about. He should be encouraged to move, ideally if possible walk around, as much as possible. If this isn't possible he should be turned about every half hour. Pressure sores can become a very serious issue if not dealt with in the early stages so you may want to take advice from a health care professional asap.

The dry mouth may be a side effect of the medication/s your father is receiving. You can get gels that will help if this is a real problem, alternatively encourage your father to drink more fluids on a more frequent basis.
