Age 69 & in general good health. My psa hovered around 1.5 to 2.1 for years, but since last year (2003) it has risen to 4.0. My doctor, when questioned, was not alarmed, considering this as normal. Close friends who have gone through many different procedures for prostate cancer indicated that new guidelines for psa indicators have been reduced from 4.0 to 2.5.
In 1985, due to enlarged & irregular prostate I underwent ultra-sound & a biopsy, with no cause for alarm.
Obviously I have concerns in this area, and while watchful waiting is at one end of the treatment spectrum, I feel that there might be other interventions that I should be considering. Thanks - John |

John,
There is one recent article detailing the prevalence of prostate cancer in individuals with different PSA levels. http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/351/2/125
Given this rapid rise, I think you should talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of getting another biopsy. I can not advise you for or against it, but it seems that you need at least close monitoring.
regards,

I have had similiar experience-I am 57 fairly healthy-psa always under 1-just had biopsy results-12 samples all neg-digital exam large and irregular-think I'd be elated not so-doc convinced, based on ultrasound and digital, that it was cancer-says,do it again 3 mo-now what do I do-2nd opinion,of course, but who??what makes it better than first??doc could not come up with plausible explanation other than old urinary infect-can't this ever be anything but cancer???

| My husband had a PSA of 2.7 then it went to 3.2 normal by most standards changed doctors and said it just didn't feel right, he has had an enlarged prostrate for years so his choice was an ultra sound or biopsy, he chose biopsy. Eleven samples taken one came back positive and he had what they condisdered stage 2 cancer and had his prostrate removed. On the other hand we have a friend whose PSA has been betwwen 5 and 7 for years , he's 64 years old and his doctor says he's fine, so I think alot depends on the doctor and have the biopsy just to make sure. It is probably one of the most cureable cancer's if treated early. Good luck. |
