Hello,

A friend has been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to his liver. It happened very suddenly as he was being treated for DVT at the time (which he is still suffering from). He has yet to be told whether or not he will receive chemo or radiation. I would like to know what sort of outcome he can expect and, if treatment is not offered, is there any hope that he could beat this through diet alone? I have been reading about the best foods and supplements to take but I am really wondering what the likely outcome is going to be so that I can prepare myself for it.

Thank you Confused

Hi Chrissie.
My wife developed a persistent cough last February, and I have been doing some research on the net to prepare myself (she will not go to the doctor)
Here are some sites I found which will help you get a handle on it.
From what I read, there is little hope that diet will help.

General:
http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/diseasemanagement/pulmonary/lungcancer/lungcancer.htm
http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic1333.htm

Staging:
http://www.oncologychannel.com/lungcancer/staging.shtml
http://www.emedicine.com/radio/topic807.htm
unfortunately by the time the cancer has metastasized to other organs such as the liver, the outlook is grim.

Other:
http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=6747
http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc72.html

For additional sites, use Google, and type in ?Lung cancer prognosis? ?Lung cancer staging? ?Lung cancer symptoms? etc. There are thousands of useful sites.

I also found this forum, where people are very responsive, helpful, and caring.

My thoughts will be with you,
Take care and stay strong,
John

Thanks for your kind words John. I will have a look at the sites you`ve recommended. I hope your wife is ok at the moment and, if not, that she will go to the doctors so that they can help her.

Regards

Chrisse

My mom was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last year around february. I don't know if the cancer of your friend's is small cell or non small cell lung cancer but as far as what to expect; it's going to be a battle. When we first diagnosed it, she was still in stage 1(only two stages for small cell). We went through both chemo and radiation treatments. Initially the cancer cells went away after the treatments. (Treatments by the way will take a toll on the patient - radiation especially but depends on the person). Within a few months, the cancer returned and in full force spreading to her liver, abdomen and bone. She is on nothing but pain meds now through hospice care. The prognosis in her advanced stage is within weeks. We are still fighting and hoping but ultimately it has been a losing battle. If you have any questions regarding my experiences and what to expect, I have no problems sharing and hopefully my experiences will help you get through yours.

Paul
