Hi my name is Katie and I have an Uncle that has just been told that he has kidney cancer. It has already spread to his lymph nodes and his lungs. They have also found a few spots in his throat. They just told us yesterday that he is in stage 4. Now to me I would think that it is near the end for him but his specialist seems to have high hopes. I was just wondering if anyone out there know why he is? Or even if anyone knows the percent of surviving kidney cancer when they have hit stage 4. I have tried to look around the web for answers but I am not finding any! Thanks to anyone that can help

Hello
Unfortunately kidney cancer can not be cured at this stage, but survival can be extended with treatment. It is a slowly growing tumor most of the time, so treatment can be effective at prolonging survival. You can check SEERS for statistics about survival.

Hi my name is Vicki, and last year in Oct.04 my husband was diagnoised with bilateral Renal Cell Carcinoma, it was contained in the Kidney capsule, and was a stage one, he had 3 surgery's to remove the Tumor's the surgeries were done Laproscopically, but i just worry all the time that it's gonna come back. He did have a PET SCAN done June 24 of this year and they say he has no cancer anywhere. I am just wondering has anyone ever had anyone that it never came back on? Please reply. Thanks....Vicki in NC

Vicki - My grandfather had this. It was just in one kidney. I don't know the stage, but guess it was stage 1. The doctor's removed the kidney and the cancer never came back. He lived for another 15 years, but eventually passed away from something else. I'm sure your husband will do just fine now if the doctors say he has no more cancer on his scans.

Hi Vicki - I have a male friend in Tampa, Florida who was diagnosed stage IV non small cell lung cancer 4 yrs ago. Had his right lung removed. Didn't get any better and his wife got him transferred to a major cancer hospital, the Moffitt in Tampa, where they found the cancer had metastasied to his left kidney. He had the kidney and associated adrenal gland removed, and is now doing absolutely fine. He is 76yrs old and looks 20 yrs younger, so there is always hope if you can get the right treatment. He has regular MRI and Petscans and has no cancer. Hope this cheers you up - Hugs, Liz.

first of all, renal cell cancer with mets to the lung is very different from small cell lung cancer with mets to the kidney(s).
renal cell cancer is a very special disease because they can be slow growing and the patient may survive for long-term with stage IV disease. secondly, resection of the primary disease (the kidney with cancer) MAY cure the disease in the secondary areas. this sounds strange but is true and there is a paper a couple of years ago in new england journal medicine. althogh most patients with stage iv rcc will not receive nephrectomy, but usually the oncologists will mention this if nephrectomy is appropriate for an individual's treatment.
stage iv rcc is not curable in most cases, treatment with interferon or chemotherapy provides response in some patients. for more info about renal cell cancer, please read
