I have an uncle that has been diagnosed with lung cancer. My father just told me yesterday. According to my father, he has a tumor in his lung that is wrapped around a main artery in his chest. I did some research and I believe that he has a tumor wrapped around the vein in the chest that brings the blood from the upper body back to the heart. I think my uncle went to the hospital because his face had swollen up a lot. They are giving him radiation treatment to try to shrink the tumor so that it can be removed. If this fails he will die.

Can anyone tell me what type of lung cancer my uncle has and what stage it is? I know that there isn't much information here, but I just want to know more about my uncle's condition.

Hello

Sorry to hear about your family member. I assume what you described is called Superior Vena Cava Syndrome (SVC Syndrome). It can happen with lung cancer, but no one would be able to tell you what type it is. Also, the treatment, as he is having is emergent radiation therapy. I have never seen anyone undergo surgery after this, in most cases there is not much that can be done, unfortunately.

regards,
Leo
