Hi Leo! First of all congratulations on setting up this site - and thankyou for your desire to help people with a diagnosis of ca.

I always thought that soy was beneficial in reducing re/occurance of breast cancer - here in the UK a book by Jane Plant entitled "Your life in your hands" suggests just that, citing the low incidence of bc in countries like China and Japan. For quite a while, I followed her diet, which advocates cutting out dairy and substituting it with soy.
However, the reports are coming in very strongly, that because soy is full of phytoestrogens, then it could act like a trigger to bc, and is therefore best avoided. What are your views on this subject, specifically in the light of the research you quote, and particularly with regard to people like myself, whose tumor was estrogen receptor positive?

Thankyou,
Sam

Hi

First of all, thanks for your comments. I am trying to get in touch with people like yourself and others to get this community going.

Anyway, environmental causes of disease are a big problem. Why ? Because massive studies with a very large group of people is necessary to prove something. Just take a look at other theories out there, such as cellular phones and cancer. There are so many confounding variables that it is a mess to try to figure it out.

Now to your question. We know that these phytoestrogens do have some effect, and despite lacking evidence that these substances can be harmful, I would avoid anything that could activate the estrogen receptors. Again, this is not shown in serious research, but it's just common sense.

regards,
Leo
