Please help!!
At the age of 68 and having smoked a minimum of 40/day for the last 45 years, my mother has this week been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, (we await the return of the biopsy, but SSLC is suspected), with a CT and various blood tests having also confirmed secondaries in the brain, the liver and the lymph nodes.
She has been put on steroids to reduce the swelling in the brain, but having been told to expect death within 24-36 hours, five days later she is still with us and although somewhat emaciated and constantly tired, with marks appearing all over her body, she fights on. My brother, sister and I don't understand how she could be so 'high' under the circumstances, although we have heard some people hit a high before they reach the end of their life.
Could someone please help us possibly understand what may be going on, as for a woman who should have died days ago, she appears otherwise healthy and is eating and planning what TV to watch for ths evening?
It simply doesn't make any sense! We have questioned the medics and they have confirmed their diagnosis, but simply tell us that different people react differently and that she may now have a day, a week, or a month. How can one handle the pressure, frstration and the not-knowing?
Any advice/opinion would be welcome, as we thirst for a more non-medical view on this horrible situation. |
