Saturday 00:45

Mr Hanna went to see Larry ay 9pm - I happened to call just as he arrived and thought I'd take the opportunity to see Larry awake and chat to George. So popped over quickly.

As they would say from space 'we have a problem' (!!!!!!!)

Sometime between my leaving at 7pm and George arriving the gunk draining from the stomach cavity changed. No-longer the nice clear red watery stuff - but something more sinister.

As I arrived the decision was taken to bring forwrd his planned tests for Sunday. so they wisked him down for x-ray, CT and fluid tests.

To shorten a 3 hour ordeal - it would appear that he has developed a leak (good possibility) or suffered some narcosis of the stomach (v bad possibility).

The reality is George does not know from the pictures - but for sure we have a problem.

The decision is to take him back into surgery tomorrow (tonight is not practical - a suitably experienced team cannot be grouped, some poor child with cardiac complications has had to go back into surgery and George is knackered).

In the meantime, Larry is being given a magnum of antibiotics, and will be IV'd to the max on fluids, potassium, etc to get him in shape for another round of cutting and sewing.

I'm devatated - and in his drugged haze he's anxious. He asked me why 'they all look so worried?'

Don't you just hate it when the pessimists are f... right? Even half right!

There has always been a 50% chance of leakage (so this does not overtly worry me) but narcosis is a totally different ball-game.

As George cannot identify the problem with going back in, we have not yet told larry the extremes of the possible promlems - but he is aware of the fact that he has a leak.

It breaks my heart. I promised to tell him everything - but I cannot tell him what we don't know!

It's difficult to be positive with so much uncertainty!

The trauma of another round of surgery seems so unfair when this round has been so tough - but the alternative of 'wait and see' is really not sensible especially given his age and fitness. Oh have I told you all he looks like 'superman' - yea yea (ED)

I remain the optimist - a dodgy staple - and a nice bit if needle-point should cure all. Let's hppe I win this round!

I'm done for the night. I want to write 'happy-stories' - but keeping you informed.

Love to you all

Hi jenny
sorry to hear the news. Keep positive. He is incredible and in good hands. We will be praying for you both. So you have Jewish, Catholic and Greek Orthodox prayers. Hopefully we've got them all covered.
Take care

Saturday 1.30pm

Hi Folks

Nothing worthy to report. I am still waiting to hear what time they will take him back into surgery. I expect it will be late this afternoon.

Come back to you later.

Love

Very sorry to hear this. There was always a chance that there could be a leak and the first three post-op days were crucial here. Lo and behold it has occured. I hope that this is just a leak rather than anything else. My thoughts are with you both.

Saturday 9pm

Good news - we can all have a little celebration.

The leak was caused by a gap in the esophagus staples. George has re-sewn and 'glued' this. they have check the work by pumping in water followed by air to check for leaks and bubbles - and the work is good.

They have also cleared the lungs - which had a build up of gunk and inserted a feeding tube to ensure that over the next few days he can be better nourished.

A new couple of consutlants have been added to the team - Simon Ashby (I'll double check the surname) who is a specialist intensive care aneathetist and a lung specialist whos name I don't yet know.

Bretween the 3 of them they will monitor him very closely over the next few days.

For the time being they will keep him sedated with the breathing machine in situ (the lung specialist will decide when this should be removed). He will then probably be in ITU for another few days - so perhaps another week in ITU before being transfered for a week+ to a regular room.

Worst 24 hours of my life - and Larrys. Georges phone call was so good.

In terms of recovery - I've been told to expect a few bad days before better ones - the whole post op thing again. But given the diligence of the enlarged team this I hope will be worry free!!

Signing off in search of hot tea, rice pudding and sleep.

Love to you all - and mega 'get better vibes' to Larry.

Delighted to hear that it was just a dodgy bit, and nothing more serious, not that I am making light of it all you understand. Three consultants, can't be bad. Hope you got your rice pudding. All love and good thoughts.
