Hey, Nancy, now I get the Muttsmom name! Cute!
Happy New Year to you and your "kids," too. I hope 2005 is really a break-through year for a cure for many kinds of cancer. I lost way, way too many friends to breast cancer this year, and Jerry Orbach's death from prostate cancer is tragic, also.
DH and I will probably curl up with a couple of steaks and some DVD movies we missed during the year. Staying home is so relaxing and safe. We are going to my mother's on New Year's Day to open Christmas presents with her and my Minnesota sister and her family.
This evening we got back from celebrating Christmas with DD and her family in Indiana where they had a LOT of snow. Temps in the 50s made quick work of it, but DGD did her best to trudge through the white stuff in the back yard before she did some face plants. At 16 months old, she can hardly move in snowsuit and boots. But, inside, she just scampers about in her stocking feet. What a cutie.
We are happy to be home and off the road again. Hugs, Lauri _________________ Diagnosed 4/11/1996

Hey Nancy!
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your "kids!" I've got my hands full with my own "kids" also - a yellow lab (Lou) and a very talkative parakeet (Jimmy). Lots of fun. We have to be very careful what we say in front of Jimmy, seriously!
Nancy, go and have yourself a wild, wanton and wicked weekend! LOL It's the best revenge against the ex. (I've got one of those, too. )
Everyone: Have a great New Year's, but stay safe. Our "goal" is for everyone to meet NED in 2005! And let's say a prayer for tsunami victims and families and for our troops in Iraq. We can hope that peace will begin in the middle east in 2005.
Hugs,
Margie |

Happy New Year To Everyone....I hope to meet NED in 2005. As for me, My husband and I will be spending a quiet evening at home watching Regis fill in for Dick Clark. I have managed to sneak in a few days at Disney after the first of the year between doctor visits and before my port placement surgery and chemo... so I have a little something to look forward to!!
Like eveyone else...my prayers are going out to the people affected by the Tsunami. I find it hard to believe and it's even hard to watch the footage on TV so I can't imagine what the people there must be going through. My heart goes out to them. _________________ Shelly

Shelly,
Guess what, you are NED my friend. Some oncos consider us NED at dx and others the day the obvious cancer is removed, so at the latest, your count down began 12/9/04, SO welcome to NEDland
As far as "kids". It would be TOO dangerous to have one that repeats what is said around this house these days. Anytime I talk to my lawyer or friends who are willing to testify if I take the assault and malicious prosecution to Civil Court since the crooked little city my ex is a cop in wants to cover for him criminally, that poor bird would be saying things that would make him/her turn red....... lol
I'm staying home tonight and just watching t.v. and relaxing. Too many idiots on the road for me.... lol
Everyone not only have a Happy and Healthy New Year, but a safe night if you're going out.

Cindy,
I couldn't agree more. When I was dx in 2002 it was 1 out of 9 women would get breast cancer in their life time and in 2004, it's 1 out of 7. When is it going to stop? When it's gets to 1 out of 6, the odds will be the same as playing russian roulette and that's scary.
I personally think they need to quit spending as much on "awareness" and more into research. I don't mean to sound cold, but any woman who's not heard of BC, mammograms (even though mine missed a 5.5 cm tumor), self breast examine has had their head in the sand.
I lost one of my best friend friends 12/1 to this disease and she was 48. I think they need to recheck their "stats" as I've seen more woman under 50 with BC. Not to say there aren't alot over 50 out there, but most of the ones I've met are in their 30s and 40s.
They are saying that the reason the number is going up for woman with BC is because of early detection. What a bunch of bull. Whether it's caught early or not, doesn't make the stats go up. It definately is a good thing to have it caught early for prognosis reasons, but the # of women with BC has nothing to do with early detection.
The ACS doesn't tell you that 45% of all BC in women under 50 are missed with mammograms and 35% of women over 50 are missed. They need to be alot more upfront NOW and not just after we're dx.
O.k. I could go on and on because this is a subject that is my soap box..... sorry for rambling but you are so right. After 30 years.....come on, where is the cure.

Nancy, I hate to tell you this, but it has already gotten to be 1 in 6 in Marin County, California. You know it has become an epidemic when babies (teenagers and 20 somethings) are getting breast cancer and have to have their breasts removed. It just tears my heart to pieces. They haven't even had a chance to live their lives yet or to nurse their babies...and they are losing their breasts. They move into "adulthood" being and feeling different from other girls/women their ages. I can't tell you how it saddens me when they talk of having to stuff their bras so they can look normal. It should not be this way. Not for them, not for us. This just has to stop. As long as society chooses not to be confronted with this ugliness, things will go on as usual. There has to be change. We (all of us) really need to start making that happen.

I agree. The question is, how do we force the ACS to be upfront? How do we jump up and down and where until someone listens? This cloud is forever over our heads of if and when it will come back and to were. I know me being stage III and "young" puts me high risk, but no stages are safe, that's for sure. If you have any suggestions, I'm in there with you!!!!!

Hi Friends,
I did read that the majority of women who get BC are over 50. I think it said 80 percent, I'm not sure. So...there are lots over 50 who are dying from this disease. I believe the women who are in their thirties and forties tend to "play" on the computer more and visit the message boards and post.
What really makes me angry is the way HRT has been passed out to women like candy. And let's not forget the dangers of birth control pills and fertility drugs. Messing with the hormones is nasty business. Yet, they still infer that HRT is not that dangerous. Well, maybe all the "proof" isn't there but in my mind it's very dangerous.
I hope everyone has a fun weekend.
Hugs,
Margie |

HI Margie,
There's no doubt there alot of women over 50 losing their battle with this disease. I promise you I didn't mean to downplay the importance of ladies over 50 or their struggles with this disease and if it came out that way, I'm so sorry.
I wanted the ACS to update their info to reflect the truth about mammograms, and that they needed to make it very clear that this disease didn't care about age and if someone is under 50, it very well could be cancer if they find a lump. So many are still being told by their PCP or Gyns that they are "too young" and "let's watch it for 6 months".
I think October should be "fight for a cure for breast cancer month" instead of "awareness"......... too many are too aware. One time with this mess is one time to many and we shouldn't have to live with this cloud over our heads our whole life, and like my dear friend Kim, her life was cut very short by this disease as are so many.
Hugs

Margie,
I totally agree with you about HRT and birth control pills being given out too freely. My 18 year old daughter went to the gyn and was complaining with terrible cramps with her period and he put her on BC pills. She is not even sexually active and I tol dher to make sure that the doctor knew about her BC family history. Both my mother and I had BC diagnosed before menopause. She said that she did and he put her on BC pills anyway. At least he did put her ont he low dose type. But it scares me to death and gives me something else to worry about. As if I need anything!!! _________________ Shelly

Hi everybody. I think that the majority of bc woman may be over 50; however, I don't think that it is because the young ones are posting more and that is why it is more in the forefront. I have never heard or seen so many young people with breast cancer. It is becoming worse and worse. A girl who use to work in my department was 17 when she got it. She had bilateral mastectomies. I have heard of others 17, 19, 20's etc. Believe it or not, I read where a girl was 14. That is the youngest yet. I am afraid for my own daughters. And Nancy, you hit the nail on the head. This disease does not care anything about age. I don't think that it is the ACS that has to be addressed. It is society that needs to be educated. Here is a page that I wrote and put on my website, in hopes of trying to bring this issue to the forefront. www.truefacesofbreastcancer.org/trueface.htm . I don't know how else to do it other than to make the issue known all over the world. All I can say is spread the word and the link to help get it out there. Forward it to media, docs, legislators...anyone/anyplace else you can think of, whenever you see the opportunity. The thing is to get the information out there so that notice is taken as to what is REALLY going on with bc. The pages are written to make a lot of noise, as it is necessary in trying to bring attention to the issue. Yes, I am angry. I hope to do something about it. Blessings.
