my dad just got surgery to remove the tumor from his face..now he has a stitches from his left eye to his mouth. this seems bad..but in retrospect..its amazing. because my dad was reffered to BY HIS DOCTOR to go to a generic surgeon to remove a generic/one-size-fits-all piece of facial tissue in "hopes" of getting all the tumor. My dad felt kind of miffed on this idea..and looked more info up on the internet himself. What he found out scared him. there is a specific office that specializes in facial cancer removal..Mohs Microsurgery. It is a process that removes a layer of skin, then they let you wait an hour while they freeze that layer of skin, and test it right there in the office, for cancer. if there is still cancer, you go back in and they take more. and so it goes until you are free of cancer, then you are finished. this gives you a 99.2% success rate. which is approximatly 15% higher than the 'general' cancer removal rate. the fact that my dad had a cherry sized tumor taken from his face..and it lengthens from his eye to his mouth..would NOT have been caught by the regular operation. Meaning, he would have to go back and have his face re-opened again and again..creating major disfiguration.
It makes him..and myself, sick at the fact that he was almost told to have this major life altering surgery, done by people that werent as qualified as others.
He went back to his doctor who referred him to the 'generic' cancer removal and told him what he went and had done(Mohs microsurgery). His doctor DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT WAS!!!!
it isn't a secret practice, it is fully covered by medical and meant specifically for facial cancer removal. the fact that his own family doctor didn't have a CLUE what this was..is baffling. How can someone IN the practice...not know how to give the best chance of recovery to his patients? it is SO aggrivating to know that my dad could have had something much worse happen with less of a success rate..if he hadn't looked around on the internet. it makes me sick and i just hope that anyone who reads this ALWAYS double checks things out for themselves..just because they're in a doctors office doesn't mean they happen to know everything...as this situation proves. its super scary and i hope that you all go to a few different doctors, as well as look some stuff up on the itnernet to better your knowledge from other peoples stories.
My sister and i are quite young in retrospect to the people who will be reading this..im geussing. im 21 and my sister is 17..but we now know at our ages..to never fully trust a doctor and to do some research ourselves. in hopes that when we get cancer..we can have it be the most minimaly damaging to our lives.
hopefully this helps some people and my dad..and us, would really appreciate any similar stories or in general any stories on Basal Cell Carsanoma or Mohns Microsurgery..since my dad cant get any of that info from his freaking doctor. jeez eh?!
