My mom was just diagnosed yesterday with stage 3b/4 nsclc. According to her drs her prognosis is grim. No time table given. Surgery is not not an option and neither is radiation. Her only options is chemo to try to make her as confortable as possible. My sisters and I are very upset but somewhat expected this. Heavy smoker for 60 years (although had stopped about 8 years ago). We just found out that her cat scan is clear (has not mettat to other organs. Drs say prognosis is still grim. It seems within the last few days she is so tired she can't do anything. She has difficulty walking and has been losing weight (18 lbs in 2-3 weeks). Breathing is difficult as well (emphazyma is also around the lungs.) Has anyone out there heard of stage 3b/4 being diagnosed and not metastizing to other organs. (It is in her lower right lung and has met to the trachea. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks

Patmark,
I'm very sorry to hear about your mom. My mom in law has stage 4 NSCLC and my grandmother had stage 4 as well. Although I don't know anyone with stage IIIB I found a detailed guide to staging.

It seems to get staged by 3 different things, and if it's in the trachea it appears that it's spread and not contained only in the lung. But I am no expert! I hope this is of some help to you. Take care, Kayla

Hi Patmark:
Sorry for hearing your mother had been dianosed with 3b/4 NSCLC. You know the incidence of advanced NSCLC has been rising increasingly and its treatment has been poor, neither surgery nor radiotherapy to be the options, although chemotherapy may be the option, its toxicity is often severe. so for strengthening the therapeutic effect of chemotherapy and reducing its adverse effects, apart from chemotherapy being given to the patient, adjuvant or supporting therapy should also be administered to enhance body's immunity and improve patient's general conditions.

Take care
