My father was diagnosed that he has stage-IV NCLC Aug 1st. The mets have gone to upper shoulder and hodskin grand (sorry for misspelling). He has been a heavy smoker for a long time. The doctor now gives us 2 weeks to make a decision whether to go with the Chemo therapy or not. At the begining, all my sisters and brothers kept this and my father did not know about it because we were afraid that he will refuse any treatments. We also hoped that he can have a better quality of life as we did not make a decision about the treatment yet. We asked the doctor not telling him the truth but did tell him that he needs to have to get some vaccine.

We all feel very bad about lying and I think he might already know but not in detail. I know it might be funny to you but we know our dad very well.

I would like to ask for comments or suggestions or sharing your experience. The most important thing for us is the quality of life for this termially ill. After doing much research, I still not sure about the Chemo therapies as it will give him a bad quality of life. However, I happened to learn about Alimta (a Chemo agent approved in 2004) which has less side effects than the other Chemo agents. Does anybody know about this? I heard that it is the second-line treatment. Can we use it as a first-line treatment? Will it be used with other agents and what about the side effects? I guess I have too many questions. I hope somebody has something to share.

Is it true that Tarceva is only good for non-smoking people? How about Iressa?

We are going to tell our dad the truth and we all will respect our dad decision. It is very likely that he will refuse the Chemo therapies. If that is the case, we are thinking about using some natural treatments such as Macrobiotic, diet, and having apricot seeds.

I guess my main question is "is it worth to have a Chemo?" If it can prolong his life but he has to suffer from the side effect, we might prefer not having the treatment. But if we don't do that now, will my dad suffer a lot?

I am so desperated now. Please advise.
