My mom (79y/0) had surgery last December 2006 to remove her middle right lobe. (NSCL adenocarcinoma) They removed the tumor & checked the nodes and said she was cancer free! THe PET scan came out clear also. She still under went chemo, just to make sure everything would be OK. Last month the Doctor did another biopsy & said the cancer had returned into her lower lobe on the same side and has spread to her lymp nodes. How can this happen? We are all in disbelief, how can it come back so quickly? We go today at 4 to see the oncologist for treatment options but the Pulmonary doctor said there really isn't anything they can do! Is this true?

Sorry to hear about your mom. Try not to be so shocked though. She is 79 years old. That is a very, long life. And she is still alive. She can fight a good fight if she wants to, or not. Either way, she has had the gift of a long life which is more than a lot of people get, even if they never get cancer. Lung cancer can evade surgery. She was lucky to be a surgical candidate in the first place. That means it was caught early. Micrometastasis occur and they can lead to big metastasis. It was no one's fault, that is just what cancer does. Enjoy the time you have with her.

Thank you for the reply, we went to her cancer Dr. and her wants her to have another PET scan to see if she will be able to have another surgery. But she is going down hill fast so I don't think that option will be available to her. Our family is spending as much time as we can with her and a friend told me I should get my video camera and have her tell us about our family and some good old stories. We will be able to cherish those forever, and my children will be able to show their children.

Thank you
