This is the first time I have posted in this group, so if I happen to write something that is inappropriate, please excuse me. I am in search of information concerning stomach cancer (unknown type) in my father. I was first notified by him via e-mail and then again by his wife (not my mother) via USPS. All the card stated was the obvious: "Your father has cancer; surgery and chemo." That is all the card mentioned.

I am assuming that there are those in this group who are also practitioners. My questions are as follows:

1. Is stomach cancer usually the primary site;
2. The fact that the plan involves both surgery and chemotherapy, would it be correct to assume that there is lymph node involvement?
3. Would it not be most appropriate to obtain a second opinion first?
4. If this situation involves a member of another's family, would they not choose to get the relative in the "Mayo Clinic?"
5. He is currently being treated by physicians in the Deltona area in Florida, and I would think that there is more aggressive treatment elsewhere.

I would certainly appreciate it if any responses are ALSO sent to my e-mail address, mea305@aol.com.

Thanks,

Mark

I presume that you are doing your own research on the internet, and will likely have found answers to many of your queries.

However, my observation is that Stomach cancer is usually primary, that it is very difficult to diagnose, and that the treatment cited seems par for the course. The reason that chemo is given is to knock out cancer cells that may have travelled from the primary site.

If you are able, I would be inclined to visit and try to see the medical team involved. Go with questions ready, and make careful note of what is said.

Thanks...and, yes, I have been doing quite a bit of research. You are correct in all you said. I thank you for taking the time to respond.

Do you know anything about the "cure rate" and/or the mortality rates?

Simple answer - no, but this link has a good clear assessment of stages:

I hope you find some help in this. I do think you need to find out exactly what he is facing.
