My father-in-law has emphysema and now has been newly diagnosed with lung cancer. He actually is very healthy and doesn't have any problems with the emphysema, not even symptoms. During his routine annual exam his xray showed a small spot on his lung. Long story short, Dr. told him that he would have about 1 1/2 years (maybe more) to live without surgery. The Dr. would hesitate surgery with his emphysema. He also stated that his cancer was "inactive." Is that normally the only information that you get about the cancer itself. He has been through all of the routine tests finishing with the PET. I'm not having much luck finding any personal experiences with the two illnesses together. He was planning to go to St. Louis but now is digcouraged. Any advice or leads would be greatly appreaciated.

Fact: It is very difficult to diagnose cancer in a person with chronic lung disease such as emphesema. The lungs make scar tissue and it can look like small tumors. In order to diagnose lung cancer, you need a biopsy. If there is no biopsy, cancer is only suspected, not confirmed.
