Fredrick 'Sugie' Bell 11/04/46 - 05/05/05.
My brave, lovely, happy-go-lucky Dad passed away on 05/05/05, after a courageous 14 month battle with this awful disease. He was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in March '04 and had a Whipple in the April, the day before his 58th birthday. He then went on to have 6 months of chemo which ended at christmas. At the end of January '05 we were told that he was all clear, but had some fluid on his right lung, which the consultant put down to his Asbestosis but took a sample of anyway. We then got the devastating news that there was cancer in the fluid, and by then the lung was completely collapsed and 2 litres of fluid was drained from around it and then the lung was reinflated. This procedure was done a few times until a permanent chest drain was left in, we were told it was called Pleural Mesotheleoma and fluid was getting in to the space around the lung and compressing or collapsing the lung. The fluid was being produced by the cancer and ther was nothing they could do. Dad took it all in his stride, and once they repaired the hole in his lung he came home wanting to get back to 'normal'.
He then began having problems with digestion and opening his bowels, he was admitted back to hopspital and after an endoscopy we were told there was a blockage, most likely to be a tumour at the bottom outlet of the stomach. He had an operation to bypass this, and slowly began to eat again. That didn't last though as he still couldn't go to the loo and became afraid to eat.
We then got the news that the disease had spread to his liver, and i think then he began to feel he'd been beaten by it. He came home on 11th April for his 59th birthday, but just wanted to get back to hospital - I think he felt safe there. We were told he had 3 months max on 15th April 05, although he didn't know that. He began to deteriorate rapidly and at the weekend we were told 2 - 3 weeks. We got another 4 days before this evil illness took him away from us.
I feel cheated that i didn't get my 3 months with him, or even 3 weeks with him, but i wouldn't have wanted him to put up with another day of that illness in the end. He knew he was dying on the Tuesday and said to us ' I'm going now, I tried but i just couldn't do it' We told him we knew he gave it his best shot, although my brother was saying 'No Dad you're not, don't go'
He hung on for another 2 days but eventually he let go. I miss him so much, but am relieved he is no longer suffering. I desperately wanted him to see his Grandson who was due 17th June, but he just missed meeting him, although I know he will see him from heaven.
I went to my dads funeral 2 weeks later, and then had Baby Freddie that night, 4 weeks early. He is now a big bouncing toddler who is the image of his Grandad and reminds me of him so much each day.
Goodnight Dad, I love you so very much and always will, I miss you more and more each day. I hope you are with Nanny and will watch over us proudly.
