My father in law is in stage IV of prostate cancer. He has involvement with bone, lymph and now possibly kidney. Although the prognosis is not good, I would like to know the amount of time he may have so that we may best prepare the family.

Hi

Data from the NAtional Cancer Institute rate metastatic disease survival at 5y is 34%, but this is impossible to extrapolate this data to an individual patient. There is no one that can predict how much time your relative has. Prostate cancer is a slow-growing cancer, but the disease may grow at a faster rate at any time, so that makes it even more difficult.

You should start making arrangements now, since you know that your relative has disseminated disease. As time goes by and things progress, it will be even more difficult to make these arrangements.

regards,
Leo
