My daughter has had a large mole on top of her head since she was about 3. We took her to the dermatologist since she has no other moles and this one was big and it looked strange. They said it was nothing but we have continued to take her in every year to have it checked. You see skin cancer runs in the family. I had my first Basal Cell in elementary school and have had several moles removed from my back that my doctor at the time did not send to pathology. All of her grandparents have also had Basal Cell and a distant cousin had Melanoma and a non blood releative has terminal melanoma. Anyway about 2 weeks ago I noticed that it had changed drastically and took her in this past Wednesday but to a different Dermatologist since I think the other one seems to blow it off. Anyway this guy said that we were right to be suspicious and sent us to a surgeon to remove it and get pathology done. He said that it has all the characteristics of a melanoma but I will not get the results for another week or so. I am scared to death. Does anyone know how long melanoma takes to spread? I am not certain when exactly it started changing since I dont look at it closely everyday. Also is there any other logical explination other than Melanoma? She is only 7 I have not told her anything at this time and have no idea what I will say if it turns out to be melanoma. Any and all ideas, suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated.

You did the right thing by having it removed, because it can strike at any age. If it is melanoma, more than likely there will have to be a re-excision of the area to remove all the cancer. I had the Mohs procedure done to remove as little skin as possible, so there won't be as much damage as removing it the standard way. It don't think there's a precise time of how long it spreads. I had nodular melanoma for a little over 3 years, and there's a possibility on my scans that it's spread. I do know that superficial spreading melanoma is not suppose to be as bad as nodular. Good luck.

P.S.- Here's a good melanoma site: http://www.mpip.org
