I'm a 33 year old female, diagnosed with melanoma last August. Thankfully, it was only insitu melanoma and it was a relatively small surgery (3 inch scar below my belly button). I understand that a high percentage of people diagnosed with melanoma can develop it again within the first year of diagnosis? My dermatologist also informed me that I have a ton of a-typical moles on my body and I have also had about 5 other (pre-cancerous moles/freckles) removed in December. I've read a lot of information on the A, B, C, D's of melanoma and have looked at thousands of pictures on the web. I do have several moles that are changing...gradually. But aren't that large (only about 1-2 mm long or less). I guess my question is, when should I become concerned? Especially since I have so many A-typical moles. Is it too early to make another appointment since seeing the doctor in December? Am I being a litte too precautious? I am relatively new at this and am concerned that since I have so many a-typical moles that one might slip past as Melanoma again.

The main reason I am asking is that I am thinking about coming pregnant for the first time this year. I am concerned that I could somehow have a re-occurence once pregnant.

Perhaps I am just looking for a little piece of mind or your thoughts of those who may been in a similar situation...or could ease my worrying mind.

Thanks to all!

ttsweety,
I think the best person to make this decision would be your health care team and specifically your dermatologist. It seems you are probably at increased risk for cancer from the information you provided and may benefit from increased skin checks. Any lesions that are bothering you or change in nature should be evaluated sooner than later. I hope this helps. Best wishes,
