Can anyone tell me if the swelling of the hands and feet are related to the nutrient levels in the body?

Hi Friend2,

My first concern would not be nutrient levels but heart function but only a medical examination can tell for sure. Go see a doctor ASAP.

Thanks. I was following up on my brother in-laws situation. He is still in the hospital, re:why the delays. My sister was told the swelling was because of the nutrient levels. He is still fighting an infection and is running a fever. It has been my experience in the past that when the body starts to shut down and there is swelling. If the problem is due to the nutrient levels ok but if it is the latter, I need to prepare me to so I will be here for her.

Now I understand better your original question. I will just add that good nutrition IS a vital part of maintaining a healthy immune system. If he is fighting an infection, good nutrition is even more important. Talk with the hospital staff about his nutritional needs and express to them your concerns that his body might be shutting down. God be with all of you.

friend2,
Feet and hand swelling can be due to a number of things including failing kidneys or heart. Also, patients with low albumin can develop generalized swelling. Albumin is a protein that is made, but levels become low with poor nutrition. To figure out what's going on takes a medical evaluation. I hope this helps. Good luck.
